What is Safety Town? Safety Town is a two week program for children entering kindergarten. Safety Town is sponsored by the Port Washington Area Kiwanis Club. The program teaches safety lessons on such topics as strangers, traffice, pedestrians, fire, bicycle, bus, poisons and drugs, water and guns. Lessons are taught through songs, activities, and special guests and speakers. The program will run in two sessions with openings for 30 students in each session. Session 1: 8:00 - 10:00 Session 2: 10:30 - 12:30
Where is Safety Town held? Safety Town is held at Dunwiddie Elementary School in Port Washington. Students learn about safety by riding small "ket cars" through the streets of a miniature town constructed on the playground. A police officer is with us daily. Further instruction is enhanced by visits from the Port Washington Fire Department, PC Patrol Car, McGruff and other guests and speakers. We will also take a short field trip on a bus to learn about bus safety and water safety.
How is the program organized? Caitlin Zozakiewicz, will be the Lead Teacher during the Safety Town program. Caitlin has been with the program since it began. Caitlin is a school psychologist for the Sheboygan Public School District. Ms. Zozakiewicz will be teaching safety topics with the help of volunteer Group Leaders. The Group Leaders work daily with the same group of 5 - 6 children. This creates a very personalized approach which allows our young "Safety Bugs" to feel comfortable. If you would like to be a volunteer Group Leader, please print out and submit the application form by May 1. References are necessary.
